This is a typical Patterson novel, in that it is packed with short chapters (117 in all), full of suspense, mystery, and intrigue. This page turner is truly exceptional until the rug is pulled out from under the reader during the climax. At first, this book reads like a Grisham hybrid, as a down and out attorney takes on a case in which he is most certainly the underdog. In fact, it is so much like a Grisham novel, that one chapter in particular is taken almost word for word from A Time to Kill.
The attorney is Tom Dunleavey, who is an ex-professional athlete who takes on the case of a young athlete who was framed for the murders of individuals who were well-known, and liked by the community. With lots of circumstantial evidence piled up against the defendent, the entire community thirsting for blood for the seemingly senseless murders, and Tom not having much courtroom experience, the story is almost cliche in that a miracle is needed to overcome the situation.
That miracle comes in the name of Kate Costello, who is Tom's ex-girlfriend. Kate is a star attorney who has already made waves in the legal field as a defense attorney. A desperate Tom seeks out her assistance, and reluctantly, she agrees to take on the case.
Gradually, they work on building up evidence to prove Dante's innocence.
The book is great, until the final twist in the book, which really left a bad taste in my mouth.
I won't give away the ending, but the twist is so ridiculous that you basically have to be lied to for the entire novel for the revelation to be conceivable and for the identity of the true murderer to be concealed until the climax. It was such a tasteless change of pace in the novel, that it was really difficult to finish the book.
Nice try at trying to avoid the cliched, sappy ending. However, this was just too much of a misstep.

Beach Road James Patterson Peter de Jonge Books Reviews
Surprise ending caught me totally off guard. Literally jaw dropping, gasping for breath. Unbelievable ending to a totally enthralling book.
One hell of a shocking ending. Not sure how I feel about it. Definitely not a happy ending. But a pretty good, quick read.
This was a really twisted story full of unexpected plot turns! Very different from what I've grown to expect from a James Patterson story. Ya caught me man! Good job
I'm normally a huge fan of Patterson, even his formulaic stuff when h e seems t o just dial it in. It's an entertaining escape. And that is what I expected with Beach Road. And entertainment was what I g of until the last 20 pages. Worst ending ever! I didn't see it coming, but it passed me off and totally made me regret staying up late to finish it!
This is a very complicated murder story. There are some complicated villians. There is also a tense court case. It is mildly interesting.
here we are again. patterson rocks & i can guarantee ya, you ain't expecting this!! so much thrilling fun. i enjoyed it so much, it felt like the first & only book i had ever read. thoroughlly engrossing with mind numbing twists,
An exceptional book, one of the best I've ever read. It left me speechless and in awe of the plot. I found myself going back to chapters to see if I could figure out anything. I could not, there were no clues but it all fell in place perfectly.
