As a lover of history and historical novels, I found CALICO PALACE to be another of Gwen Bristow's masterpieces! The story of the development of California from a few shacks and tents to a thriving city was fascinating. What people had to do to even get to California in the 1800s was described as a living nightmare, but people were willing to go through it to get to the gold that had been discovered there. Reading this book will give the reader a vivid picture of what it took to add California to the United States. Gwen Bristow's books are a living history of this country, especially the American West. When I am finished with one of her books, I am really sad!Tags : Calico Palace [Gwen bristow] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Gwen bristow,Calico Palace,Pocket,0671824716,Fiction,Non-Classifiable
Calico Palace Gwen bristow 9780671824716 Books Reviews
I read this book many years ago and was delighted to find it once again. The first part is not, in my opinion, written as well as the balance of the book. Why? I have no idea. The joy of this book is that the story keeps moving on and never gets boring.
Bristow (1903-1980) wrote a number of bestselling historical novels, including my teenage favorite Jubilee Trail. Her books have now been reissued by Chicago Review Press. I picked up Calico Palace. It is a detailed, fictionalized record of San Francisco from the year before the gold rush until three years later. The brutality of travel, the dangers of mining, the ensuing greed, the rapid progress of commerce and the city are made vivid by the characters of Kendra and Marny. Bristow's books always feature a sheltered young lady (with soon discovered core of steel) and a blowsy, worldly-wise sidekick. In retrospect, I realize how much these characters affected my sense of self, from Jubilee Trail to Prairie Rose, another old frontier favorite. Nice to remember and a damn fine read.
I picked up this book because it popped up as a recommendation, and had excellent reviews. After the first few chapters, it was clear that this was not a giant of a book. It is an extra long movie script or a soap opera in book form. It’s predictable. I kept reading because just like you can’t stop eating something that you know is nutritionally worthless, I wanted to see how each drama played out. The writing itself is decent, but again, won’t be on “the greatest writers” list. It was nice for an escape, but that’s all.
I had forgotten what a pale reproduction of Jubilee Trail this book was. It was very long, very repetitive in itself, and painfully derivative. I found the ending completely unbelievable and I was quite annoyed that Kendra and Hiram just dropped off the face of the earth as they were much more interesting than either Pocket or Marny. I'm almost sorry I re-read this as I had fond memories of it from reading as a girl.
Excellent story set in early San Francisco beginning prior to the the gold rush. It chronicles the survival of two women and a lively variety of other characters through the history of San Francisco during the gold rush years. Once you start reading this one you wont want to put it down.
This is an old favorite of mine, I named my daughter after the main character, Kendra. It was fun to go back and read it again after some 30 years. If you like westerns and stories of Old California in the Gold Rush days this is the book for you. Characters you will love and some you will hate, many who will tickle you and many you will recognize from your own lives, a great read.
I read this book many years ago and always remembered it with great fondness. I was so impressed with Marny's independence and loved the excitement of living during such huge time in our country's history. Very well written with great characters. Can't recommend this book enough. It's a must read if you enjoy adventure and history!
